The International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual is one of the most important and authoritative reference books for search and rescue work. It plays a significant role in the safety of aviation and navigation. In addition, air disasters and marine casualties incur frequently in recent years. People pay much attention to the aeronautical and maritime search and rescue capability. Moreover, vocabulary is one of the key factors in understanding texts. However, there is little research about the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual from the perspective of vocabulary domestically and internationally. IAMSAR is analyzed from the perspective of lexical features in this thesis, so that readers are capable of having a deep understanding of the Manual.On the basis of the corpus-based study, quantitative and qualitative analysis approaches are adopted in this thesis. From the perspective of word length, lexical density, lexical coverage, high frequency words and the main means of word formation in those high frequency words, the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual is analyzed comparing to International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue in this thesis. By means of a comprehensive analysis, it reveals that there are many repetitive words occurring in the Manual. Readers need to pay much attention to those high frequency words in order to memorize them. Therefore, they are capable of comprehending most of the Manual. In addition, readers need to learn the technical words related with search and rescue and some acronyms before reading the Manual. After familiarizing and memorizing those words, readers are capable of having a deep comprehension of the manual. Thus, readers are capable of achieving the goal of promoting the ability for search and rescue. Finally, it is concluded that the vocabulary in IAMSAR is slightly difficult than that in SAR 79 via the comparison of word length, lexical density and lexical coverage of IAMSAR and SAR 79.
