Anhui writer Zhou Tianlai was a miracle in the history of modernChinese literature. Since the late1920s to the1940s, a short span of twenty years, hehas published novels in35, as well as a large number of novels and essays haveappeared in major newspapers of Shanghai. As civilian sectors of Shanghai stylewriter, Zhou Tianlai is famous and influential. Although due to various reasons havebeen unable to load the history, he and his creation have attracted the attention of agrowing number of researchers. To evaluate the literary significance of Zhou Tianlai’sliterary creation, this paper is divided into five parts, with focusing on the works ofchildren’s literature and social novels of Zhou Tianlai and proves its worth.Introduction section Outlines the present academic research status on ZhouTianlai ’s creation, analyzes the shortcomings of studies and points out that afterexcluding extreme left-wing ideology, the best authors names have been eclipsed willincreasingly return to the literary scene. Zhou Tianlai’s name will also appear in thehistory of modern Chinese literature in the future.The first chapter describes Zhou Tianlai’s life and characteristics of his writings.Section I focuses on survey of Zhou Tianlai’s life and works, and analyzes theinfluence of his experience to the creation, as well as in different historical stage ofthe creative contribution. By means of comparative analysis, in the second quarter,highlight the distinct personality of Zhou Tianlai ’s creation, such as standing up tonobility of Shanghai style as an equal, the "Shanghai dialect with bright color”, anddifferent approaches but equally satisfactory results with “Zhang Ailing and ZhangHenshui”.Chapter II focuses on the works of Zhou Tianlai’s children’s literature. After thepreliminary analysis of "children discovery" in the "May4th" period, it points outthat Zhou Tianlai ’s children’s literature is the relay to the “May4th".He had created ahappy children’s image to interpret the "problem of child" from another level, withshowing a reaction against "bitter child" reality. But after that the image of childrenchanged with his creation at the same time, the image of children experienced from single to complex, from the sweet to bitter. In addition, Zhou Tianlai’s works isinteresting and readable, due to the view of children, rich and colorful children imageand witty language.Chapter III focuses on the social novel of Zhou Tianlai. The first section analyzesthe social background of such novels and points out that they are representatives of"women found" after the "May4th". The second section analyzes in detailed theimage of women in the social novel of Zhou Tianlai, such as the prostitute women andnew women, and points out that his novels concern for women, as the voice of women,and make a contribution to expanding of the female subject. The third sectionanalyzes the various male "citizens" image around the class women, and points outthat these male citizens, on the one hand, and women in the work is "binaryopposition" relationship, on the other hand, is the need of the novel presenting theoverall urban landscape.The fourth chapter is reviewing and thinking about Zhou Tianlai’s creation.Firstly it analyzes that the reasons of Zhou Tianlai’s works literature were shielded,such as the creation of subjective limitations, obstacles in the tabloid media, andhighlight that due to the time factor and the choice of history, Zhou Tianlai and hiscreation cannot avoid the fate of being diluted by mainstream literary world out.However, with the tide of cultural pluralism, women literature and women writing thethird peak arrival, the traditional novel renewed popularity, the constantly emerging ofthe grass-roots literature writers in the new period, Zhou Tianlai’s study finallyresurgent in the1990s.Conclusion part is the summary of the essay content, proving that Zhou Tianlai’sliterature made a contribution to modern Chinese literature, especially thecontribution to modern Chinese children’s literature and popular literature, andproposed own view for the future study.
