Based on the polyphony discourse theory put forward by M.Bakhtin, French textual Julia Kristeva raised the textual theory "intertextuality". From then on, the term "intertext" received a great number of attention and quotation in academic circle, which set off an upsurge of research about "intertextuality". On the basis of Kristeva’s intertextuality, this dissertation aims at discussing the significant roles of a translator through the procedure of translation from a new perspective of intertextulity, using the English version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji translated by Lin Yutang. In particular, emphasizing on the intertext memories and the translator’s emotion expressed in the translation will be further discussed and explained in this dissertation. In the meanwhile, the methods and strategies of translation of Fu Sheng Liu Ji used by Lin Yutang will also be analyzed. Hence, the influence of the subjective consciousness and emotional experience on adopting the methods and strategies of translation will be shown out. It is found that:(1) the text is changeable and indefinite, in other words, the text can not only be across the time and space, but also be synchronic and diachronic, coming into an intertextual relationship, which may be intricate and complex to stretch away as far.(2) while combing the study of intertextuality and translation on the identity of a translator, it is found that the translator’s language culture as well as emotional experience has produced an effect on the whole translational process, all of the abovementioned factors contributed to the selection of the translation of methods and strategies. According to the three steps for producing a new text:apprehending the source text, explaining the source text and recreating the source text, the translator can interact with the writer, the text and the target readers into building up a connection as well as transfering the source text into the target text with the help of the target language efficiently and completely to fulfill the target text, which then is coming to arouse the resonance and deliver the source culture in the end. (3) Not only because of his famous works and translations, but also his pure heart for his motherland China, do all of Lin Yutang’s emotional experiences focus on the translation. In conclusion, this dissertation imposes significance on the translator’s subjective activities, especially his emotional experience, which may lay a foundation for providing translation researchers with a certain reference in further exploring the question of translator’s roles put forward by intertextuality in literature translation. On the other hand, there is practical value in discussing the combining the theory of intertextuality with translation through explaining the translation methods and strategies adopted in the English version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji by Lin Yutang.
