David Herbert Lawrence is one of the unique and outstanding writers in the English Industrial Age. Women in Love is the very representative of his highest achievement in novel creation. The publication of this novel has aroused various reviewer’s commentaries. This thesis tends to approach the novel in light of Nietzsche’s Revaluation of all values, through the analysis of distorted values of being and family relationship, as well as Lawrence’s strategy of revaluation through Lawrence’s hero Birkin. The first chapter provides introduction to the novel and the theory basis of the thesis. The first part is an introduction to Lawrence and Women in Love, in which the plot and the influences of the novel are presented. Then, there is an introduction to Nietzsche’s Revaluation of all values, as well as its contextual background. Chapter two is focused on the distorted value of human existence, and gives a detailed analysis of Nietzsche’s views concerning industrial success, including its eroding influences upon humanity, and knowledge, which Lawrence respectively echos through his two characters--Gerald and Hermione. Chapter three explores the problematic values of human relationship, which Lawrence displays through the alienation of wife from husband, and children from their parents. Chapter four is devoted to Larence’s strategy of revaluation with regard to the issues of being and the relationship between man and woman through Birkin. The Conclusion part provides another bird eye view of the thesis. The industrial development results in the chaotic society where the old values is twisted and devoid. Accordingly, Lawrence and Nietzsche’s insightful observation of the collapse of the values and their strategy of revaluation is of great significance, despite their limitations.
