Adaptation theory, raised by Verschueren, emphasizes that individuals are required tomake conscious or unconscious linguistic selections constantly. This theory proposes thatmaking adaptation is the key to maintaining the dynamic balance within discourse. As acomplex verbal communication process, interpretation tends to focus on various actionsacross different contexts, languages and cultures. Without any doubt, this process shallinvolve variable factors. Consequently, it is plausible to draw this conclusion thatinterpretation is also a process of making choices continuously in the interest ofadaptation.After the World War II, the development of the study for interpretation has gonethrough interpretation experience to theoretical interpreting research. With thedevelopment of linguistics, the studies of discourse markers have also reached a new stage.However, discourse markers, as an efficient tool for better comprehension of the originalspeech and boost for successful interpretation, has not been attached to enough academicattention. Few scholars have attached significance on the applications of discoursemarkers in interpreting. In this paper, adaptation theory is used as guidance to examine thefunction of discourse marker in C-E consecutive interpreting.In this paper, the discourse marker Haiyou is taken as the research subject. Firstly,generally reviews of previous studies on discourse marker and on consecutiveinterpretation, evolving mechanism of Haiyou and theoretical framework of the presentresearch is presented. Secondly, the author introduces the methodology applied in thisthesis. Last, for the body of this paper, it identifies a function of Haiyou in the originaltexts of the consecutive interpretation. Based on the data collected in the corpus, and adetailed description of the interpretation of Haiyou in C-E consecutive interpreting isalso provided. The major findings of this paper are as follows:(1) from the prospective of AdaptionTheory, the function of the original discourse marker Haiyou is classified into four kinds:supplementing, strengthening, hedging and opening topic.(2) different ways forinterpreting discourse marker Haiyou have been applied by different interpreters, suchas also, and, moreover, further, still, etc.(3) for the better convey of messageand achieving the aim of successful communication, the function of the interpreting ofdiscourse marker could change under the guidance of linguistic adaptation...
