Compared with traditional China, the relationship between family and state in modern China is very different. The patriarchal clan system and feudal system in Western Zhou Dynasty maked family and state follow the same ethical system. Ruling by Filial Piety in the Han Dynasty strengthened the ethical system. Meanwhile, many Confucian scholar-officials were devoted to civilize local society. Therefore, family ethics provide a basis for traditional China. However, modern China faced grear challenges at home and abroad. Some scholars accepted the western state concept, which demanded a pure relationship between individual and state. In their opinion, the traditional family was an obstacle to individual freedom and state prosperity. So they criticized the traditional ethical systems. But those criticisms didn’t make a success. Nationalism and Cultural Nationalism gave new views of nation-building. They wanted to rebuild the ethics community through Chinese history and culture. Obviously the ethical system was founded from below to top in traditional China and the ethics community was designed from above to below in modern China.Above all, this article focuses on the relationship between family and state in modern China.
