A Conversation Analysis Of Requests In Mandarin Chinese

With the continuous development of society, the exchanges and communications between people are more and more frequent and important. Request has been an important part of language communication in daily conversation. Unavoidably, the situations often occur to us when we make requests or are requested. The methods of making and building requests and the forms of requests become particularly important in order to achieve the communicative purpose and make the request successful.Many scholars have been on the studies of request at home and abroad over decades. The existing researches at home are mainly scrutinized in pragmatics, cross-cultural studies or other linguistic aspects, whereas the requests in daily communication in Mandarin Chinese through conversation analysis are rarely explored. The sequence structures and the underling social mechanism and social law are the purposes of conversation analysis. Methodologically speaking, conversational analysis needs to collect a large number of natural corpuses, and carries on the qualitative research. The present study will observes the request in daily communication in Mandarin Chinese employing conversation analysis.For objective research of the request, the collected 150 recordings on requests will be transcribed. This study will analyze the sequence organizations and entitlements of requests in daily conversation in Mandarin Chinese using basic theory of conversation analysis such as sequence structure, dispreference organization, and turn design and so on. This study firstly focuses on expansions of the adjacency pair of requests and their subdivisions respectively, and also generalizes the four sequence organizations of request supported by examples. Then the study observes the entitlements of the request embodied on the two interrogative request formats.All in all, the request is one of the important phenomena in daily communication in Mandarin Chinese. Through analyzing the request from the perspective of conversation analysis, this study finds out the detailed features of request. It is hoped that the study can guide us to communicate effectively and achieve the communicative.objectives successfully.
