The present study concentrates on the contributions and influences of the ordinary language philosopher Paul Grice to the field of linguistics. The present thesis is a qualitative study based on Paul Grice’s theories and the existing studies of his life and those theories, including both theoretical researches and applied researches.The previous research on Paul Grice mainly focused on his proposal of non-natural meaning in meaning theory, conversational implicature, cooperative principle and their applied researches. The present study gives a profound elaboration of the inspirations given by Paul Grice’s theories to the later researches and developments of the different branches of linguistics. This thesis is constructed on the brief introduction to Paul Grice’s meaning theories, which actually is a new perspective different from the previous study on meaning in the fields of both philosophy and linguistics. The investigation focuses on the enlightenment of Paul Grice’s theories on linguistic researches, including morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, neuropragmatics, linguistic stylistics, discourse analysis, experimental pragmatics and conversation analysis.As one of the representatives of ordinary language philosophy, Paul Grice has played a significant role in philosophical circle, and left the far-reaching impact for the linguistic world. A relatively comprehensive and comparative study on Paul Grice from the linguistic perspective can afford an insight into the beneficial supplement which these theories give about the study of meaning in linguistics and also some wide application in the various fields in the linguistic world. Besides, it provides a new insight into the exploration of the studies on Paul Grice for those researchers who are interested in both philosophy and linguistics.The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter gives a general introduction to the research object, objective, significance and methodology of the study. The second chapter is the literature review of the existing studies of Paul Grice’s life and his theories, which lay the foundation for the following study. Chapter three is a brief introduction to Grice’s meaning theories. The fourth chapter analyzes the enlightenment of Paul Grice’s theories on linguistic researches, including morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, neuropragmatics, linguistic stylistics, discourse analysis, experimental pragmatics and conversation analysis. The fifth chapter mainly summarizes major findings, implications, and limitations of the present study.
