| This research makes an analysis on fifty-nine business English news discourses of Market Leader Business English Course Book 1-5(second edition) from three aspects of ideational grammatical metaphor, interpersonal grammatical metaphor and textual grammatical metaphor. This study adopts a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. First of all, it will build a micro corpus, composing of the above mentioned discourses. Secondly, all used grammatical metaphor in the corpus will be tagged manually, and in order to determine the main realization form of grammatical metaphor in the corpus, the occurrence of frequency of each type of grammatical metaphor will be statistical. Then, based on the main realization form, it will have a further exploration on functions of grammatical metaphor in the corpus. Finally, it will have a detailed analysis concerning influences these functions have on reading comprehension of the targeted corpora. The results show that lots of grammatical metaphor exists in the targeted corpus. Among it, the main realization form of ideational grammatical metaphor is nominalization which has discursive function and information condensed function. In interpersonal grammatical metaphor, the main realization form of metaphor of mood is statement by interrogative mood which can arouse readers’ attention and elicit news writers’ personal opinions; the main realization form of metaphor of modality is explicitly subjective expression which can objectify news information. As for textual grammatical metaphor, the main realization form of metaphorical themes is marked theme which can emphasize the initial information of the sentence, and the main realization form of metaphorical news is condensed news which can make news discourse concise and coherent. Finally, it’s concluded that the use of grammatical metaphor truly increases the difficulty in reading comprehension of the business English news discourses. |
