| Metaphor is a term in which an expression is used to indicate something that it does not literally express in order to suggest a similarity. From the perspective of cognitive science, metaphor is not only related with language, but also related with mind. As a kind of language phenomenon, metaphor reflects different cultural models which are used in different languages. In 1980, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson co-authored the book Metaphors We live by, systematically proposing that metaphor is a cognitive mode of human. George Lakoff believes that metaphor not only exists in the language, but also in their minds, their actions and every aspect of their life.As a kind of social activity, sport carries cultural factors. Created by human only, sport is an important evidence that differs human beings from other animals. With the development of human society, modern sports culture will be more and more prosperous and even become a symbol of social civilization level. Because of the difference in cultural backgrounds, even the same sport the news reports of Chinese and English are different. Among so many sports games, basketball game of National Basketball Association (NBA) is the most popular and representative one.In previous studies, a large number of application documents were analyzed from the perspective of metaphor. Among these thesis, there exits the theoretical thesis on introducing cognitive metaphor or comparing it with other theories. There also exits some application articles on analyzing the concrete language from the perspective of metaphor as color, animal, emotion, plant and so forth. However, few analyzes sports news from the perspective of metaphor, even less in analyzing Chinese and English NBA sports news on metaphor. Thus, we can understand the differences of Chinese and English metaphors in NBA news reports directly by analyzing Chinese and English NBA news reports by applying the conceptual metaphor theory.The thesis aims to give a comparative analysis on conceptual metaphors of Chinese and English NBA news reports. These following questions are to be answered:1. How many main types of metaphors are there in Chinese and English NBA news reports? 2. What are the main features of metaphors in Chinese and English NBA news reports? 3. What are the reasons leading to these similarities and differences?By sampling and analyzing metaphors in Chinese and English NBA news reports, we have gotten various metaphors in Chinese and English NBA news reports on game competitors, game procedures and game results. Among these metaphors, both Chinese and English are fond of using war metaphors, business metaphors and travel metaphors. However, in English NBA news reports they are inclined to use more animal and nature metaphors on game competitors, container metaphors on game procedure and plant metaphors on game result. On the other side, Chinese metaphors prefer using food and ghost on competitors, using food on game procedure and game result. And the reasons that leading to these similarities and differences are also presented in the thesis. Due to the same acquisition on basketball game, the metaphors of Chinese and English NBA news have similar expressions. On the other side, their different metaphor expressions are mainly caused by their regions, religious beliefs, cultures, histories, various understanding on basketball games and so forth. |
