Gist interpreting has been widely used in interpreting competition, entrance examination for interpreting majors, interpretation teaching and escort interpreting. The research of gist interpreting strategies will not only inspire interpreting teaching, it is also important for interpreting practice. The author looked up plenty of literature, only to find few related researches to date. Also, there are only a few researches in this regard at home.Gao Ruiling, in her MA thesis, discussed the application of gist interpreting, the role and significance of practicing gist interpreting and inspiration of gist interpreting for teaching. A Study on Gist Interpreting Practice by Deng Jianhua, associate professor from Northeast University was published in 2013. Ms. Deng explored the difficulties that contestants encountered in gist interpreting in the Third Cross-Strait English Interpreting Competition, discussed Deverbalization and the importance of Chunking and Logical Analysis to comprehension and memory. However, Both of them did not propose any feasible strategies.This paper proposes strategies for gist interpreting under the guidance of Interpretation Procedure and Cognitive Complementation of Interpretative Theory and Baddeley Model of Working Memory. Meanwhile, the cases in gist interpreting in 2014 English Interpreting competitions of Hunan shall be used as cases to illustrate the strategies so as to come to the conclusionThis dissertation consists of the introduction, four chapters and the conclusion. In the introduction part, background and significance of study shall be presented. In addition, hypothesis of the study will be introduced. The author found that the major difficulties that the contestants met in gist interpreting were:failure to comprehending and remembering the meaning after watching two competitions in Hunan province in 2014 (the Fifth Cross-strait English Interpreting Contest, Hunan Division and the First Hunan Postgraduates English Translation Competition) on site. Thus, the author proposed a hypothesis that there exist strategies for solving the problems of comprehension and memory in gist interpreting. Chapter one involves the definition of gist interpreting, the significance of gist interpreting training and the application and the study of gist interpreting at home and abroad. Chapter two concerns the theoretical foundation which comprises Interpretation Procedure and Cognitive Complementation of Interpretative Theory and Baddeley Model of Working Memory. Chapter three constitutes the key part which shall focus on the strategies for solving the problems of comprehension and memory under the guidance of theoretical basis. Chapter four shall analyze the cases of contestants in gist interpreting so as to illustrate the strategies mentioned in Chapter three. The last part is the closing. The process and fruit of the study and flaws shall be concluded in this part.To sum up, a conclusion can be drawn from the demonstration process of gist interpreting strategies. That is to say, the strategies proposed in this paper, which include Logical Analysis, Cognitive Complement, Subvocalization Retelling, Chunking and Aid of Visual Information, are feasible.
