The orchestra suite "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone" is written by an American composer John Williams for the film "Harry Potter and t he Sorcerer’s stone". John Williams is one of the most outstanding Ameri can masters of soundtrack in twentieth century. His music pieces are diverse, always dramatic and lyrical. This suite includes four pieces: “Hedwig’s Theme”,“The Sorcerer’s stone”, “Nimbus2000” and “Harry’s Wondrous World" respectively. Three songs in the suite are chosen from in the movie soundtracks.This thesis studies the "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone" suite. The first chapter summarizes the background of the movie "Harry Potter", the composition concepts of John Williams, and the development of soundtrack. The second chapter analyse the suite’s structure, progression, and traits of modes. The third chapter analyse the arranging stypes and variations. The second and the third chapters emphasize analysis on composition techniques. The fourth chapter analyse the connections between music and film. This thesis is based on analysis on composition techniques, associated with composition background, and music functionalities, etc, comprehensively examining key points chapter by chapter. This thesis aims to discuss the essence of John Williams’ composition and methods to apply music in films through comprehensive analysis throughout relative scores.
