Among verbal complement phrases in mandarin, some verbs can’t take only monosyllables as their complements, such as ‘jingming’ and ‘baiqi’, but can also take disyllable synonyms, which contain the same morpheme as the monosyllables, such as ‘jiangmingbai’ and ‘baizhengqi’. We mark the former as ‘V + A’, the latter ‘V + AB/BA’. This thesis takes the verbal complement phrases ‘V + A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’ as object. In reference to the former scholars’ research and in possession of abundant corpus, this paper probes into the verbal complement phrases ‘V + A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’ to research on their similarities and differences from the perspective of phonetics, syntactic, semantics and pragmatics, thus finding out their selective constrains.Six chapters that compose the thesis are as following: The first chapter is introduction. It briefly introduces the background, research status and value, research object and method, and the corpus resources and so on.Chapter Two discusses the phonetic condition of the structure of ‘V + A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’. Having analyzed the verbal complement phrases in A Dictionary of Chinese Verb-Resultative Complement Phrases, this section summarizes several phonetic categories of adhesive verbal complement phrases in mandarin, then probes into the phonetic collocation of the phrases ‘V+A’ and ‘V+AB/BA’, thus finding out which category can be set up and which can not. In reference to the former scholars’ research, Chapter Two finally discusses the reason why some categories can be set up or not.The third part elaborates the semantic condition of the verbal complement phrases ‘V + A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’. Three factors are clarified to be connective with the selective constrains of the phrases ‘V + A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’: the semantic range, the semantic statute and the semantic extension of ‘A’ and ‘AB/BA’.Chapter Four consults the syntactic condition of the verbal complement phrases ‘V + A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’. Those factors are clarified to be connective with the selective constrains of the phrases ‘V + A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’: the grammatically-partial words ‘de’ and ‘le’, the quantifiers ‘xie’ and ‘dian/dian’er’, the form of the verb ‘V’ and whether the structure can take object or not. In addition, Chapter Four focuses on the ways how the verbal complement phrases ‘V + A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’ take object.Chapter Five probes into the pragmatic condition of the verbal complement phrases ‘V + A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’ from the perspectives of the Principle of Economy in Language, cooperative principle and the style of ‘A’ and ‘V + AB/BA’.The last chapter is the epilogue. It comes to the conclusion that factors in phonetics, semantics, syntax and pragmatics can influence we choose either structure ‘V+A’ or ‘V+AB/BA’, and those factors influence each other.
