Munch was the great expressionist painter in the late 19 th century early 20 th century; his art as a bold attempt and breakthrough after post-impressionist in the history of art in the west toward subjective expression from previous objective reappear, which established his expressionism pioneer status. His artistic creation became an important turning point in history. In terms of art, painting language development from single to multiple, the content of the painting is also changing,,but the real work of art is always closely related to his age, is a reflection of reality times.Munch’s paintings shake people. His painting reflects his inner feelings; he never hesitates to uncover the inside feeling in front of the world. Emotional expression and the perfect fusion of painting language reflected in the Munch’s paintings.This paper mainly discusses the Munch paintings of emotional expression. Combining his life experience, I will interpret the emotional expression in his works from the perspective of psychoanalysis. The expression of emotion inevitably related to the age, so the first chapter is about the background of era, including politic, economy, philosophyand art trend. The second chapter mainly discusses the formation process of Munch’s painting style which then makes the theoretical foundation of the analysis on emotional expression in Munch’s works. The third chapter mainly analysis and demonstrate expression of emotion in Munch’s works, from two aspects of the subject of paintings and works of visual form. In the fourth chapter, conclusions about the influences on the contemporary and future generations of painting will be given, basing on the analysis of the feelings of Edward munch’s painting and two thinking questions are drawn at the same time. We should reject the dross and assimilate the essence from the art of munch.In the contemporary artistic creation, we need to be able to emancipate the mind and brave to try.We draw works should be sincere and deeply moving.
