College English teachers in independent colleges are a very young group who are just getting started on the path of professional development. There are many problems, and the solution to these problems needs teachers’ own efforts, and support from schools and government.This paper studies the present situation and the difficulties confronted by college English teachers in terms of their professional development in 8 independent colleges in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The questionnaire mainly involves five dimensions:knowledge literacy, ability of teaching, academic research, professional ethics, and professional development consciousness, aiming to find answers to four main research issues:(1) the current situation of college English teachers in independent colleges in the process of professional development; (2) the difficulties confronted by college English teachers in independent colleges in the process of professional development; (3) the factors that influence the college English teachers’ professional development in independent colleges; and (4) countermeasures to reduce the difficulties confronted by college English teachers in independent colleges in the process of professional development.Through investigation and analysis, this paper gets the following results:(1) under the new market economy system, modern science and technology, to a certain extent, it has inspired college English teachers’ professional development, but at the same time, it also has brought huge impact and some difficulties to college English teachers’ professional development. (1) These effects are reflected in the teachers’ knowledge literacy, ability of teaching, academic research, professional ethics, professional development consciousness etc. (2) The promulgation of the relevant national policies and documents also has produced considerable impact on college English teacher’s professional development, which in one way or anther turns into pressure; (3) Guangxi is located in southwest of China, and its economic development lags behind, which in a certain extent has caused imbalance of college English teachers’ professional development.According to the research results, this paper presents respectively both internal and external factors which affect college English teachers’ professional development and offers corresponding countermeasures.
