Among all genres in vocal music, opera is considered the most difficult one because it usually requires the highest singing skills. With a main focus on singing, opera is a comprehensive performance which incorporates music, dance, poetry, instrumental performance and other various types of art. Chinese opera inherits several characteristics such as structures, styles, singing skills and formats of art that belong to Western opera originated at Italy. This paper examines the development and evolution of both Western opera and Chinese opera from various perspectives. Specifically, I conduct an in-depth analysis on a Western opera 《One Fine Day 》 and a Chinese opera 《A Miserable Life》 based on my own experience in performing these two masterpieces. I also conclude that the singing techniques required in performing a Western opera can also be applied to the performance of a Chinese opera, and vice versa.
