The source text of this translation is the 13 th chapter “Improvement in Translation and Translation Studies” and the 14 th chapter “Synchrony and Diachrony in Translation Work”, excerpted from Basics of Translation Studies by Cay Dollerup. Chapter 13 mainly introduces how Andrew Chesterman explores the improvement in translation solutions, translation teaching as well as working procedures according to Karl Popper’s problem solving schema. And chapter 14 mainly focuses on the chronological and spatial dimensions of translation work, and it also emphasizes that translation is a major force in linguistic and cultural changes.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’ text typology, the characteristics and translation principles of informative text are discussed through the analysis of the source text. The author mainly analyzes it from three aspects, which are the vocabulary, the sentence structure and the text. During the translation process, the translation methods of addition, omission and conversion are employed in terms of the choice of vocabulary to make the translation objective, simple and brief. As for the sentence structure, the principles of purpose, accuracy and readability are observed. Meanwhile, the author also discusses the significance of division in coping with long and complicated sentences. When it comes to the text, stylistic features of the target text should be consistent with the source text. Apart from that, the author strives to make the translation fluent, logical, readable and idiomatic.Through this translation practice, the author has a better understanding of text typology, and learns the characteristics and principles of informative text, which might be of avail to later translation.
