With the proposal of "cultural turn" in translation, translation is no longer a simple conversion between two languages, but a conversion between two cultures. Therefore, before translation, the translator must have a deep research on the target language and culture, or it is likely to cause cultural misreading. Because of the colorful local features and rich language in Mo Yan’s novel, so it is a examination for translators on the understanding of Chinese culture. This thesis mainly studies the cultural misreading in short stories of White Dog Swing which is translated by Yoshida Tomio.Generally speaking, cultural misreading can be divided into intentional translation and unintentional misreading. From the literal meaning, we can easily understand that the unintentional misunderstanding is due to the translator’s insufficient understanding of the culture in the target language or be absent-concentrate in translation, the meaning of intentional translation is that translators knows the meaning of the original text but because they follow some translation strategies that they translated it into other words which can be replaced intentionally.This thesis consists of the introduction, three chapters and conclusion. The first chapter introduces the structure of collection of short stories "white dog swing" and its strong local cultural characteristics and language characteristics, illustrate the difficulty of translation. The second chapter analysis on the example of unintentional misunderstanding from the following four aspects, which is the misreading due to "pre understanding", semantic and contextual misreading, insufficiency in traditions and customs, dialects. Then analyze the reason of the misunderstanding. The third chapter analyze the examples of intentional translation found in the context, the first section is the analysis from three aspects of the aesthetic, religious and cultural, the second section analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the intentional translation through translation strategy of domestication and foreignization.In respect of this collection of short stories, what happened in "Gaomi northeast township" described by Mo Yan can be better and more completely transmitted to Japanese readers through the analysis of cultural misreading in the novel; In respect of translation workers, it is conducive to remind translators to pay more attention to avoid various problems in face of local strong cultural fiction’s translation through the analysis of cultural misreading examples in this thesis. In a word, this thesis have a certain role both on promoting the translation studies and spreading Chinese culture to overseas.
