A Study Of Subtitle Translation Of Desperate Housewives From The Perspective Of Deconstructive Translation Theories

As domestic cultural market is open, foreign films have flooded into China, even watching the American TV series has become a fashion. Therefore, the research about subtitle translation should be taken seriously. The first season of Desperate Housewives was premiered in October 2004. A fictional town- the wisteria is the background of the play. This drama depicts the suburban life of four housewives. There are new thread and plot in each season, and a few new characters will be added. In 2012, the eighth season became the final of the play.In the late 1960 s, French postmodernism became the origin of the deconstruction. It was put forward by Derrida for the first time in the year of 1967. Benjamin, Barthes, Foucault and Lawrence Venuti introduced the theory into the translation studies. They tried to explain the communication behavior between languages. These scholars all went against the traditional concept-- "fidelity" in translation tasks, believing that the ultimate meaning of the text does not exist. The supreme authority of the authors has being questioned. They proposed that the translator should be the main body of the text. Translation is the afterlife of the original. Derrida`s view, because the characteristics of "differance(which means difference)" of translation, inevitably lead to differences in understanding and expression in translation. He put forward the concept of "spread", even in the same translation different readers will have different feelings. As for "rewrite", Derrida thinks that "rewriting" is the re-creation of the original text in form and image, giving the original new life, accepted by the target language audience. Venuti detailed study the history of western translation again since Derrida, deeply criticize to the previous tendency that the dominant of the target language. He proposed against the smooth, and put forward the resistance deconstructive translation strategy. Venuti thought, the previous traditional translation, were adapting the values of national centralism and imperialism to shape foreign text. The principles of translation are "smooth" and "naturalization" of translation. Venuti put forward against the smooth translation theory and practice. The aim is not to eliminate the differences in language and culture in translation, but rather to be expressed in translation in the language and cultural differences. This thesis first from the view of deconstruction character, analyze "desperate housewives" subtitle translation subvert the traditional concept of "fidelity" in translation. In the subtitle translation of Desperate Housewives, from the macro aspect, the translators have made the adjustment and reorganization of the original. From the micro aspect, the translators added some words such as cultural characteristics. Secondly, by described the deconstructive translation theory of "the reveal of the translator” and the resistant translation strategy for subtitle translation of desperate housewives. At the same time, the subtitle translation of desperate housewives also highlights the subject position of the translator, and the form of change in the process of translation is a way of "rewriting". So the subtitle translation in "Desperate Housewives" is a masterpiece directed by the translation theory of deconstruction.
