Traditional depression assessment which only report the macro ability by a total score and factor scores can not reveal the presence or absence of depression symptoms. This is not conducive to the development of mental health services. Cognitive diagnosis can assess and diagnose individual ability and internal structure in a macro and micro perspective, which demonstrates the outlook of the assessment of mental disorders. In this study, a compensatory polytomous cognitive model was developed based on cumulative category response function and was applied to the assessment of depression symptoms. The research indicated:(1)The good precision of the estimation and the robust estimated method showed that the model was feasible. The algorithm could realize the estimation of the parameters. The pattern match ration() could be effectively improved by the increasing of the length of the test and the number of the subjects and, conversely, the would reduce with the increasing of the attributes number. Compared with the of model, when the data sets were polytomous, theof the model was higher, which meant the application of themodel was wider.(2) The Bifactor model fit the structure of the depression symptom rating scale well, which indicated depression symptom contain five specific factors and one general factor(that is depression factor).(3) There were 227 kinds of symptom presence patterns in 856 subjects, and the number of major symptom presence patterns was 9(512 subjects accounted for 59.81%). In the 9 symptom presence patterns, the mean probability of attribute master of attribute A10 were higher. For the 125 patients in hospital, there were 75 kinds of symptom presence patterns. And about 53.6% of patients had different degree depression. In 10 attributes, the probability of attribute 2, attribute 3,attribute 4 and attribute 9 were higher, indicated that the patients were apt to suffer from loss of interest or interest, fatigue and reduced energy, problems in attention and concentration, and thoughts of death or self-injury.(4)The assessment and diagnosis based on cognitive diagnosis could give a report about the total score, symptoms pattern(the presence or absence of depression symptoms) and the suicide tendency for the subject, doctor, their family and teacher, so that they could take some measures to promote physical and mental health.(5)There was a high correlation between attributes of the diagnosis of the P-DINO model and the assessment of the SDS,which meant that the validity was well.(6)Compared with the result of assessment based on SDS, the result of assessment based on cognitive diagnosis was better for cases analysis, which could provide more detailed symptoms information, so as to serve targeted treatment and prevention.
