Traditional Chinese medicine(thereafter TCM) epitomizes the traditional Chinese culture. During its long process of development, based on the essence of Chinese literature, religion and philosophy, TCM has summarized a series of experiences on treating diseases. For its good therapeutic effect, TCM has won more and more attention from western society. Under the tendency of globalization of TCM, the translation of TCM terms is a premise of TCM promotion and a need for cultural exchange.Translation is closely related to culture. The cultural features of language and cultural transmission of translation constitute an important part of the research of cultural translation. Translation is not merely a transformation between two languages but more of a construction of culture. Medio-transtology is an important part of comparative literature. It focuses on the study of cultural factors in translation studies. Under the view of culture, medio-transtology mainly concerns the loss, transformation, addition and expansion of cultural information during the process of transformation between source language(SL) and target language(TL). During the process of cross-cultural translation, cultural default occurs when the author omits the cultural background information to his intended readers. On account of different cultural background of Chinese and western people, cultural default may lead to misunderstandings in TCM by the foreign readers. Thus, in the process of TCM translation, it requires translators not only to be faithful to the TCM terms but also to exert their creativity to use different kinds of strategies on reconstructing the missing information of cultural default.Under the perspective of medio-transtology, the thesis discusses about the phenomenon of cultural default in translation of TCM terms and finally gains a systematic recognition. The thesis author analyzes different kinds of manifestation of creative treason and then puts forward a series of effective translation compensation strategies to reconstruct and supplement the information of cultural default, such as amplification, simplicity, literal translation and free translation and so on. The purpose is to emphasize the transmission of cultural information in the translation of TCM terms, and finally to promote the transmission of TCM.
