XU Dishan is a distinctive one in Chinese Modern Literature,the Nan Yang scenery he painted in the novels extremely shown the foreign characteristics.By analyzing of the deep quite spirit of Buddhism in Symbiotic Birds and the Christian spirit of mercy in Laboring Spiders,this thesis trying to grasp the religion fusion in XU Dishan’s novel.Geographic relevance makes the four major ancient civilizations have a giant impact on Nan yang,especially the Chinese civilization and the India civilization.Historical factors make the relationship between China and Nan Yang evolved into a long epic which is full of blood.By depicting the survival condition of Nan Yang people and overseas Chinese groups which XU Dishan portrayed in his novels in the1920 s,especially woman’s fate and struggle,to further explore the way how XU Dishan solve the Chinese native issue.This paper discusses from the following four parts:The first chapter reviews the stages of XU Dishan Research refer to the geographical and time coordinates,combines with the advances of“the study of exotic images” in Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature,expands the definition of “image” to the broad category.Reviewing of this paper’s value and meaning to proving that is a part which was missing in XU Dishan Research and “the study of exotic images”.The second chapter analyzes the form of XU Dishan’s novels,gets the reflection of realistic and romantic factors in author’s life.Exploresfamily education,social environment,especially the exotic elements factors affect the style of the author.The third chapter expounds the special geographic environment of Nan Yang and the influence by China,India, Western countries.Symbiotic Birds and Laboring Spiders express the “exotic images of Nan Yang”.They associates many religion factors a lot,especially Nan Yang’s religion.In the same period,other writers show something different in their texts from XU Dishan.The fourth chapter analyzes the carefully hidden “self-image” which is behind the “others”.Thanks the reality of life and the background of religions,XU Dishan has a different angle in the problem of nationality issue.Exotica, love, woman’s fate and religious factors blended,finally common customs and religions turn to each other.Factors of exotic images give readers more abundant reading experience,what more important is to fully exploit Nan Yang image in the gallery of Modern Chinese Literature,offer another possibility to resolve the national issues.
