Known as the first man of middle literature,Junichi Watanab spent decades in creating many literary works from 1965 to 2014. Working for more than 40 years, Junichi Watanab spared no effort to write. He published around 130 works which had a great influence on readers in Japan and even the whole world. As Junichi’s works were popular, the female characters in his works caught readers’ attention little by little. And many people both in Japan and at abroad especially paid their attention to female mentality. The topic of most of his works was about the extramarital affair of the middle age. He focused on describing characters’ emotion. As a result, he created many female characters who were gorgeous and had personality. A variety of characters had their own features and all of them showed that Junichi admired women and paid his attention to modern women from the bottom of his heart. The graduation thesis is in the order of year, focuses on Junichi Watanab’s several works and targets at heroines in the literature. Ignoring the order of time, I mainly analyse the causes of forming the female characters in Junichi’s works. Analysing the main features of heroines, the female characters in Junichi’s literautre are divided into the ideal woman, the woman stuck in incest and the dual role of a talented woman and hag. By means of studying Junichi’s ideal woman and its practical influence, I can research the marrow of Junichi’s literature. The ideal woman that Junichi Watanab has been longing for is neither a male accessory nor a homemaker who is called an understanding wife and loving mother in traditional concept. To be exact, Junichi believes that the ideal woman should have traditional virtues, good temperament, independent viability and independent personality. They are the girls of new age.
