The Research On Poetry Of Ancient And Modern Monks

Monk poets first appeared in Eastern Jin, since then the monks began composing poems.With the development of Buddhism, the monk poets team grows, until the Ming dynasty, Buddhist literature cannot be ignored.Predecessors have already realized the value of the monk poetry,and they compiled collection of monk poetry,such as Li Gong’s TangSengHongXiuJi,Chen Qi’s Selected poems of Song dynasty monk.The Predeces-sors limited the poetry to a dynasty or a group, but it is difficult to reflect the overall appearance and evolution process of monk poetry. On the basis of inheriting predecessors’ achievements,Puwen,Zhengmian,Xingtong edited the Poetry of Ancient and Modern Monks.This poetry included the 366 monks from Eastern Jin to WanLi of Ming dynasty and2829 poems. It’s the most complete collection of the monk poetry in ancient China.So research the Poetry of Ancient and Modern Monks is necessary.We found the Poetry of Ancient and Modern Monks of WanLi version in Shanghai library,which is the oldest version.WanLi version have three preface of the frontispiece,Xuanli and the All Previous Dynasties Monk Biography than SiKu version.These documents have an important value to research the author and writing process of the Poetry of Ancient and Modern Monks.In addition,the All Previous Dynasties Monk Biography recording some monks who haven’t record on other books.This thesis is based on the Poetry of Ancient and Modern Monks text,comparing the existing two versions of collating, revealing the literature value of WanLi version,correcting the mistakes of SiKu version, and using the collating of the book for subsequent research.Based on the data statistics of the various aspects,like the total number, the individual number of poetry,the subject matter, the genre. Reading through the book,having analysis of the text and data, combining the XuanLi, the standards of poetry selecting are discussed. First,attaches great importance to the of the dhamma and moral self-cultivation of the monks.Second,advocate the style of classic literary.Third, choose the subjects,the author like the poetry which carried forward Buddhism and concerned about the reality,and abandon the poetry which praises theroyal family and porn. The author also choose a little poetry of farewell and leisure.But the actual situation wasn’t conform to the standards of poetry selecting.Although the Poetry of Ancient and Modern Monks choose monk poem of all previous dynasties,the poetry choose a little poetry of Song dynasty.It affect the value of the monk on the poetic history.There also have some mistake in choosing work.In comparison with the All Previous Dynasties Poetry, we found that due to the limitation of their own learning, ZhengMian wasn’t carry out the standards of poetry selecting. The All Previous Dynasties Poetry was more precise the Poetry of Ancient and Modern Monks.In spite of this, we can’t ignore the author save documents work and the value of the monk poetry history of the Poetry of Ancient and Modern Monks.
