A Study On Translation Quality Of C-E Discourse Cohesive Devices In Machine Translation

The increasing development of the modern society and human civilization has put forward more and more progress and upgrade of the high technology. The continuous development and upgrade of machine translation(MT) can play an indispensable as well as significant role in meeting the demands for humans to achieve the cross-regional communications and making it much more convenient to pass and share multimedia information on a global scale. Compared with traditional human translation(HT), MT, which gains more and more attentions with its undeniable advantages, such as fast speed, low cost and easy operation, has become the hot topic in international researches. However, after about half century’s study, the quality of MT still has no substantial breakthroughs because the machine translation is lack of human beings’ peculiar ability to cognize and handle the social knowledge. In addition, academic circle has not reached an agreement about the unified evaluation criteria about the quality of MT.The author holds the view that it cannot be denied MT has played a quite critical part in the field of business, politics, economy, culture, technology, military and so on. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct the relevant researches and studies about the quality of MT. So far, an excellent MT text cannot be achieved without human intervention, adjustment or polishing afterwards. Given this, this paper would like to conduct the study about the MT quality through using discourse cohesive devices, explore the advantages and disadvantages of it, make the comparison and analysis about different literary forms, put forward the influence on MT quality of different discourse styles and provide evaluations of MT. In detail, the author intends to firstly make the brief review about the appearance and development of MT and the evaluation of translation quality, and then the comparison of HT and MT. The focus of this paper is the analysis of the MT quality of different literary forms based on the discourse cohesive devices, comparison between HT and MT and machine translation quality of different literary forms so as to conclude the methods about how to improve the MT quality. The author firmly believes that the unremitting exploration and research about machine translation will open a new era of MT.
