A Study Of "Benevolent People Can Love People" Theory Of Confucius

“Benevolence”is the core of Confucius philosophy, also is the core of Confucian philosophy. Its basic spirit is “loving people”. The origin of “Benevolence”theory, or the metaphysical basis of Confucius, is “destiny”. The destiny thoughts of Confucius originated from the culture thoughts of Western Zhou dynasty in ancient China. However, the destiny thoughts of Western Zhou dynasty originated from the culture of the Shang dynasty. The philosopher of Zhou dynasty have been transformed heaven thoughts of Shang period. They thought that the destiny will change. “Destiny” will only be visited with moral people. The people of Zhou period gave moral willing and ethical concept to “Destiny”, and produced the feature of “the destiny of moralization”. The “destiny” cared for the people, so the ruler wanted to be appointed by“destiny”only through “strive for virtues”and “respect virtues”.The“tian”embodies the public opinion, so the thought of the unity of the destiny and people was produced. In the opinion of Confucius, the main meaning of “tian”is “the tian of moralization”. “Tian”, “destiny” or “tian dao” finally became the highest principle of moral value of people. “Respect virtues” of approach of ruler have been converted into personal moral practice by Confucius,so as to achieve communication of the“destiny” by the practice of the morality. In this way, the “tian” have finally become the root and highest principle of moral value of people. No matter Confucius or the later Confucianism, both considered that “tian” is metaphysical basis and theoretical origin of moral and ethical and social order of people. As the basic spirit of Confucian “ren xue” thought, benevolence is also moral, so “tian” is also metaphysical basis of benevolence of Confucian thought.The most basic meaning of benevolence is “loving relatives”, namely filial piety.Filial piety has a long history in ancient China, and is used as a kind of ethical norms,namely universal moral and ethical value. Filial piety is the root of “ren”, is also family ethics, when family ethics is expanded, it is “loving people” and “loving things”.“Benevolence” is intrinsic to the main body of virtue. How to realize the "benevolence" ? Confucius put forward an important point, namely practice approach of “Overcoming themselves” and “relying on themselves”. The purpose of practicing“benevolence” is governing the country. What’s more, the highest level of“benevolence” theory of Confucius is universal love spirit.
