As a classic document of Western philosophy, Aristotle’s Metaphysics is important.The Z, H, and(?)volumes of Metaphysics are also known as the "core volumes", while the Z volume focusing on the substance concept is the core of the core volumes. This research bases on the text of Z volume and focuses on the concept of" the what-being-is" (to ti en einai, or essence) which is the key concept to clarify important connotations of the substance concept.Specifically, this paper can be divided into three parts. The first part is related to the core theory of Being and the comments on the substance concept in the Categories and Physics. The second part is the core of this paper, which will study the necessary connection between the concept "the what-being-is" and " substance" with the guidance of the latest researches. The third part regards the definition concept of Aristotle as a starting point to explore, to examine " the what-being-is". By examining these three parts, this paper will reveal the essentialist connotation of the substance concept by studying the concept of " the what-being-is".
