British Island Literature is an important literary school in the history of literature. One of the most important factors in British Island Literature is an "island", in which many aspects of human society are reflected such as social background, the surviving mode of human beings, values and the relationship between humans and the ecological environment. With the development of science and technology as a double-edged sword, we humans have benefited lots of conveniences and at the same time suffered from lots of problems incurred by inappropriate employment or abuse of science and technology. Actually, how science and technology affect us humans and our ecological environment all depends on our own actions guided by our human nature.Human nature is multifaceted. If The Coral Island reflects good human nature, then Lord of the Flies reveals an evil one. A comparative study of The Coral Island and Lord of the Flies is intended to help us better understand different influences exerted by human nature, different social backgrounds and values.A new type of literary criticism, eco-criticism, came into being subsequent to many ecological problems caused by economic development at the cost of nature. This new school of literary criticism explores the relationship between literature and nature, and the relationship between man and nature. British Island Literature, as its name suggests, falls under this rubric, exploring the relationship between humans, literature and ecological environment. An integrated approach of combining induction and deduction and drawing upon a great deal of relevant literature forms the basis of the present comparative study of The Coral Island and Lord of the Flies with a view to bringing out the ecological implications of British Island Literature for suppressing the dark side of human nature and building up a sustainable and harmonious relationship between man and nature.
