With the gradual improvement of the awareness of world water resources protection,environmental protection monograph earns its popularity. For the past few years, China has launched environmental protection measures, and has improved its impact on the field. However, the environmental protection concepts abroad are more advanced.than China Therefore, it is of great importance to translate writings on protecting water resources.The Big Thirst-The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water was written based on the investigation report on water resources crisis in America. This summary of translation mainly report the translation practice of chapter three from The Big Thirst-The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water by Charles Fishman. The book is an investgation report on the American water resourses crisis. The difficulties lie in the translation of long sentences and proper nouns such as people’s names, places names and organization names.This summary explains translation strategies of long sentences, and analysizes the characteristics of English long sentences, and also introduces translation process.The summarizing part adopted case analysis method to analysize translating stratagies for typical cases. Different translating stratagies are used according to different situations,such as linear translation, inverse translation, division, subsumption, interpolation and integration. In addition, it is of great importance to use different translating strategies flexibly, based on the reading experience of the source language readers and the structure of the sentencesBecause the book includes many long sentences, therefore the translation of long sentences became the key to translation. Only by letting the target language readers and the source language readers have the same reading experience, can the goal of cultural communication be achieve. What we can learn from the book is that to improve the condition of our country’s waste of water is of great significant.
