The manufacturing industry plays a vital role in the development of a country. With the increasingly strengthened exchanges in the manufacturing industry, the translation in this field becomes ever more important. However, the translation practice in this field usually lacks appropriate translation strategies, so the translated works are of varying qualities. This translation report, based on the author‘s translation practice on the manufacturing industry, guided by the Skopos theory, is trying to provide some translation strategies for the translation in the manufacturing field.Skopos theory was first proposed by German translation theorist Hans Vermeer. Its core concept is: the most important factor in translation process is the purpose of its overall translation behavior. In order to achieve the purpose of translation, translator can take any appropriate translation strategies. Skopos theory has three major rules: skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. Skopos rule means that the whole translation process should be guided by the purpose of translation; coherence rule means that translation must conform to intratextual coherence; and fidelity rule means that there should be intertextual coherence between the source text and the target text. Coherence rule and fidelity rule must be subordinated to skopos rule—the highest rule. These three rules have very important theoretical significance in the translation of popular science text(informative text) in manufacturing industries. This report is based on an English-Chinese translation project undertaken by MTI center of the School of Foreign Languages in Beijing Institute of Technology. This translation project, entrusted by China Science and Technology Press, involves the translation of an encyclopaedia named Science published by the DK press in the UK. This author manily deals with the translation of the part concerning the manufacturing industry. The important and difficult problems encountered bu the author in the translation can be classified into the following: specialized vocabularies, words, non-predicate verbs as well as the attributive clauses. And in this report the author accordingly puts forward some specific, easily operated translation strategies under the guidance of Skopos theory, aiming to provide some feasible and workable reference for English-Chinese translation of popular science text in the manufacturing industry and promote the further study in this field.
