James Joyce(1882-1941), one of the most prominent figures in the first half of the20 th century, is also identified as the “Writer of the Writers” and the great artist of Modernism(Zhu 79). As a complicated artistic genius, James Joyce has created a body of works, among which Dubliners is recognized as the representative piece of Joyce’s Modernistic ideology during his early days. And this short story collection also marks the beginning of Joyce’s stepping on the way of revolution and innovation as a Modernist in the field of literature. This thesis researches on the “Revolt Theme” of this short story collection Dubliners mainly from the following three aspects.Firstly, the analysis focuses on “James Joyce’s revolt against the tradition”. The discussion includes Joyce’s revolt against the conventional social belief as well as his revolt against the doctrines of the Catholic Church in the society of Ireland. Then the second part is about the explanation of “James Joyce’s new concept” in his composing of the collection. They are Joyce’s emphasis on individuality and his calling for love and equality in marriage reflected in Dubliners. Last but not least, the third part concerns with“Joyce’s reflection on the paralytic modern society”. The analysis focuses on the dilemma of the modern man and the paralytic society.Through the analysis of the above three aspects, it is possible to reach a conclusion that in this short story collection Dubliners, Joyce presents the readers with his spirit of revolt in the surroundings of the modern society. Therefore it is grounded that James Joyce is a man of rebellious spirit.
