The translator has been in a marginal place in the history of translation study. The cultural turn in the 1970 s shifted the focus of translation study from the text to the study of culture. Thus as the most active role in translation, the status of translator was improved gradually. The translator’s subjectivity has received wide attention both abroad and at home. It becomes a hot topic in translation study. There is a close relation between Hermeneutics and translation. Hermeneutics is a theory about text interpreting and understanding. Its development promotes that of translation and provides many new perspectives for translation study. George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutic motion theory, which includes trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation, makes a concrete description for the process of cultural translation. This thesis adopts Hermeneutic framework, especially George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutic translation motion theory, to study translator’s subjectivity through analyzing Sun Zhili’s Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice. The purpose of this thesis is to testify the applicability of philosophical hermeneutical approach in translation studies. At first, the thesis briefly introduces the research background, objective, significance, etc. And it makes a summarization for studies on Hermeneutics and translator’s subjectivity at home and abroad, Pride and Prejudice and its translation. Then it expounds Hermeneutics, especially Steiner’s hermeneutic motion theory and its relation to translator’s subjectivity. At last, it applies Steiner’s hermeneutic motion theory to analyze the translation of Pride and Prejudice. Based on Sun’s trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation, it discusses Sun’s subjectivity in his Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice. By a qualitative research, the thesis will study respectively how Hermeneutics and translator’s subjectivity are applied to Sun’s Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice, how the Hermeneutics motion theory is applied to the analysis of the translator’s subjectivity in Sun’s Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice.Through the research of the thesis, George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutic motion theory can objectively and clearly interpret the subjectivity of Sun Zhili in his translation of Pride and Prejudice. This study not only promotes the development of Hermeneutics and becomes a solid support for translation theories, but also provides a new and novel perspective for translation study in the field of translator’s subjectivity. Meanwhile, this study also offers a meaningful reference for future research.
