Words and phrases are generated on two different levels in generative gra mmar, morphology and syntax. The study and the derivation of C hinese synthetic compounds are hot issues in linguistic research. The two main opinions the researchers hold are “Lexicalist Theory” and “Syntactic Approach Theory”. Until now, there has been no consistent answer or experimental study on this topic yet. This paper takes Chinese 5 syllab ic primary compounds, synthetic compounds, and “De-phrases” which have the same meaning with synthetic compounds as corpus, to compare the performance of aphasic patients which are Broca’s aphasia and Wernicke’s aphasia with the control group on comprehension and production, and discuss the neural system of Chinese synthetic compounds. The result is all subjects have the best performance on synthetic compounds, and worst performance on synthetic compounds. And in picture naming, the aphasic patients treat the “VOH” form as the right synthetic compounds. Our conclusions are as follows:Firstly, In this study, the language perception of the aphasic subjects on synthetic compounds are worse than primary conpounds because the injury of their brains, and the Broca’s area is important in language production. So we depict the processing route of C hinese synthetic compounds: First, the auditory cortex receives the phonological information, then the processing route divides into two streams, one includes the posterior middle and inferior portions of the temporal lobes, and the other includes posterior region of the frontal lobe and the area in the Sylvian fissure at the parieto-temporal boundary. Language production is on the basis of perception, if you want to produce language, the information is sent to Broca’s area then to supramaginal gyrus, finally to anterior central gyrus. Until then, synthetic compounds can be spoken out.Secondly, according to the model, we found that the neural basis of synthetic compounds and phrases are similar, but the process of synthetic compounds is more complex, which may be related to verb movement.
