The frequent cross-cultural communication is closely associated with the globalization of world, in which news plays a significant part. As a vital tool of information transmission, news conveys latest events both at home and abroad in a concise way, which inevitably shoulders heavy responsibility for the political, economic and cultural communication between China and other countries. Thus, E-C news translation has become an essential means for Chinese to get familiar with the colorful world, and the study on it is drawing more and more scholars’ attention. The objective of this dissertation is to make an exploration for the Chinese translation of English news within the framework of Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory; Jef Verschueren holds that language use is a continuous making of linguistic choices with different degrees of salience to adapt to communicative purpose. In fact, translation is an extremely complex process of cross-cultural communication, which is also regarded as a process of making choices. In the news translation, Adaptation Theory focuses on the dynamic interadaptability between contextual correlates and structural objects as well as the salience of adaptation processes. Contextual correlates of adaptability requires translators to adapt to linguistic context of source texts and cultural context of target texts, and structural objects of adaptability requests translators to make choices from a series of untterance-building ingredients in accordance with utterance-building principles of target language. Because of the interadaptability between contextual correlates and structural objects, the dynamics of meaning generation is reserved in the target texts. According to the salience of adaptation processes, translators should adapt to mind in society so as to have a careful study on sentences for the purpose of the high-quality translation. In this dissertation, case analyses and comparative analyses are applied to conduct a tentative research on the application of Adaptation Theory in E-C news translation, and some common problems of E-C news translation are dissected from lexical, syntactic and cultural level. On that basis, the dissertation probes into the applicability and feasibility of the application in E-C news translation from four investigative angles, namely, contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability, and salience of the adaptation processes. The study finds that Chinese translation of English news can be more accurate and more effective under the guidance of Adaptation Theory.
