This paper is a translation report whose original text is excerpted from the fifth chapter of Fundamentals of Psycholinguistics compiled by A John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.,(2011). The fifth chapter, the Speaker: Producing Speech, is written by Professor Eva M. Fernández,Helen Smith Cairns. This book is used as the main textbook and relevant teaching reference book for most of the American language schools and its writers are experienced teachers of linguistics, among whom some are famous professors or academic authorities. Applied in the classroom teaching for several years, this book is firmly recognized by the students of language schools. Therefore, the author hopes to provide more relevant resource of Psycholinguistics to the readers through translating parts of this book.In this project, the author did the work according to Peter Newmark’s text typology, through the text function orientation and the analysis of language characteristics, and used the translation strategy of giving the first place to communicative translation and semantic translation supplemented. Under the guidance of the theory and relevant translation skills, the author finished this translation project.This report consists of five parts. Chapter one is an introduction.Chapter two describes the background of the translation project, including the Significance of the translation project and then the source text analysis. Chapter three presents the process of translation, which includes the preparation before practical translating, translation process and the checking after. Chapter four is the case analysis of translation. In this part, the author analyses the vocabularies and sentences through the flexibility of words and the adjustment of sentences. At last, the author gives the summary of this report and points out some problems to be resolved, and the author sums up what he has learned from this translating experience.
