Chinese comparative literature began in the early 20 th century, and Chinese image study in comparative literature research became prevalent in the 21 st century, which started relatively late compared with western comparative literature. Its main research field concentrates on the domain of analyzing China’s exotic image from the angle of literature. Over the years, domestic scholars have obtained certain achievements in the aspect of theory and practice through continuous efforts, but the research methods and perspectives are still single and lack of theoretical system. At present, the interdisciplinary research is a development trend of imagology of comparative literature studies, this also provides the basis of the theory and practice for the studies of religious characters. Therefore, this article chooses the image of comparative literature study as the theoretical guidance in combination with the social history and the era background of the late Qing dynasty during the period of the republic of China, and then carries out the dialectical analysis of the comparative literature study from the perspective of "the other", "social collective imagination" through the systemic examination and study of relevant literature text. This paper tries to draw lessons from the theory of imagology of comparative literature, and conduct the study on foreign missionaries Pollard image, aiming at exploring how the multidimensional image of Pollard and other missionaries formed, opening up a new vision of the study of comparative literature image and expanding the area of the study of image by trying to provide a new research method. This article is divided into two parts, including the introduction and the text. The introduction part mainly involves the dynamic research of academic history combing and the introductions of main contents and basic methods. The text includes four interconnecting aspects: The first aspect is an overview of where Pollard carried out mission work such as Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan edge and a brief introduction of the theory background of the formation of Pollard’s "the other" image. The second aspect is the self image description of Pollard. Pollard struggled for his beloved all his life, this is also the process of self-image formation. The third aspect is Pollard’s image of image accumulation from the angle of “the other”, and this aspect explores the formation process of Pollard’s multidimensional image from the view of western missionaries, Chinese believers andnon-believers, and authority. The fourth aspect is the theoretical reflection of the formation of Pollard’s image. which on the one hand is integrating and interpreting the multidimensional Pollard image by using the basic principle and method of imagology of comparative literature, and on the other hand is analyzing the origin of the diversity and difference of the formation of the multidimensional image and revealing the academic value and practical value of the topic.
