Stained glass as a decoration art which prevailed from 12 th century to 16 th century in the Europe,was especially famous for the stained glass of Gothic church.Stained glass once was a wall decorations in the Gothic church and had splendid attraction along with the prosperous of Gothic church.It had inseparable connection with Gothic church,not only had decorative function,but also had played a very important role in preach Christian’s faith with the perfect combination of the church interior space.It was considered to be a miracle in the west art history.This paper is a research about Medieval Gothic church stained glass,it will take five parts to represent stained glass.The first chapter mainly depicts the purpose and importance of thesis. The author explained the topic significance in two aspects: the art status of stained glass and promote the medieval Christian faith;Based on the research situation in domestic and overseas,the author makes a detailed account in the development history 、 the development of stained glass in different areas 、 narrative function and religious implication of the medieval stained glass decoration.The second chapter mainly concerns the process of stained glass,which contains the definition of stained glass;the early discovery of stained glass;analyzes the reason of stained glass from the Angle of society and technology;gives a detailed description of manufacturing process、artistic characteristics and makes a simple classification and division about stained glass’ s distribution in time and space.The third chapter mainly discusses the relationship between the stained glass decoration and Christianity. This part gives a detail depiction from the stained glass and the church interior space construction of the spiritual space;the relationship between the stained glass and the Christian philosophy;the stained glass and the light;the stained glass and the color of the religious implication.The author wants to demonstrates the stained glass as decoration in Gothic church plays an important role in sermon.The fourth chapter mainly discuss the difference between stained glass and Romanesque church frescoes and Renaissance art, the author hopes to give readers better understanding of stained glass,compared with Romanesque church frescoes and Renaissance art from philosophy, era background, layout and artistic characteristics.The fifth chapter mainly about the influence about stained glass to the European society.This section will describe the influence from two aspects:western visual impact and modern natural science to discuss the society value of stained glass.Conclusion: in view of the process and characteristics of stained glass in Europe,the relationship between stained glass and Christianity,the difference between stained glass and stained glass and Romanesque church frescoes and Renaissance art and influence of stained glass,makes an inductive summary of the value of the western society.Stained glass windows in a church enhances the beauty of their setting and to preach Christianity through narrative or symbolism.
