Ren Bonian is a Flower-and-bird painting artist in late Q ing Dynasty, whose most traditional works with modern styles and popular aesthetic interesting influenced by both western paintings and Chinese folk paintings. With unique painting style and original skills on ink strokes and Figures in Flower-and-bird Painting, he creates personal concept by strong art expression. The effect of Q ing Teng, Zhu Da and Eight Eccentric Artists in Yangzhou on Ren Bonian’s freehand brushwork paintings is significant and bring new pattern to his Composition. His ink stokes are simple and powerful, indicating his cool and stubborn characteristic, which apparently show the inner spirit of art.This paper discusses the features in ink stokes and figures of Ren Bonian’s freehand Flower-and-bird Paintings to find out the beauty and relationship between “outside similarity” and “inside similarity”. Through the research on it, not only let us feel the interest and charm in the figures, but also recognise the perfect meaning to combine folk paintings and scholars’ paintings. Meantime, we will know the details of the development trend of C hinese comtemporary paintings in freehand Flower-and-bird painting. Ren Bonian uses many western techniques in Traditional Chinese Paintings, raising it to a higher- level. His open belief of learning from other civilizations and culture and his action to change in new period undoubtedly benifit research of modern art theory and creation of C hinese paintings. This thesis combines contemporary aesthetics, aesthetic thought and my own creations to talk about the apllication of Ren Bonian’s ink strokes. At last, this paper summarises the conclusion of his ink language and thematic content in a diachronic comparison.
