A Study Of Trauma Narrative Of Anthony Burgess’ S A Clockwork Orange

Anthony Burgess is a famous British experimental novelist in the twentieth century. During his writing career, Anthony Burgess has experimented many good scientific theories. And one of these is the traumatic theory of Freud. The Combing of trauma with narratology has become more and more popular in literary criticism.Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange is a work of this kind. Trauma narrative refers to the narration of a trauma: the different narrative skills used in the expression of trauma.This thesis is made up of three chapters. The First Chapter mainly discusses the multiple narratives of the novel in the forming of trauma. With the developing of the plot, the change of Alex′s identity is the first level of narrative. The second level of narrative focuses its attention on the forming of trauma. The third level of narration states the process and result of a government′s reform on its society.The Second Chapter mainly discusses the unconventional language features used in the expression of trauma. The first part of this chapter gives a description about some language features. The second part analyzes the effects of the Nadsat language.The Third Chapter studies the effects of the meta-narrative have on the generalization of trauma. In the first part, what is meta-narrative is given to the readers. And the second part discusses the effects of meta-narrative.Based on the above listed three chapters, the author draws the conclusion that as a form of narrative, trauma narrative has many advantages. And the author also points out the main thoughts of Anthony Burgess about society, life, morality that he tries to convey through this novel.
