The book Stuff Matters is written by Mark Miodownik. This book is exposed to explain internal causes of a specific object which have been considered to be normal phenomenon but is not common in our daily life. While most of the science books are of no fun, this book accords with modern thinking habit with its vivid language style. The purpose of translating this book is to make the readers understand both the essence of theory in this book and the content of it.To achieve the expected goal, the translator translates this book on the basis of functional equivalence theory. Putting this task under the background of language and scientific technology can give a better understanding to the readers.The translator chooses the second chapter and part of the book’s Chapter Four as her translation material. This thesis is made up of two parts:translation practice and report on the practice. And the practice refers to that the translator translates the selected chapters into Chinese altogether about ten thousand words. There are three parts in this thesis:The first part is introduction. The reason why the translator chooses the book stuff matters as the translation material has been explained in this part. And the translation theory that has been used during the translation process has been briefly mentioned.The second part includes three chapters. Chapter One introduces the background of the book and the writer and the characteristics of the book. In this part, the audience will have a better understanding of the book and the writer. Chapter Two introduces the process of the translation. The process of translation is more complex than the translator has thought. Preparation is very import for the translator to do the work well. Chapter Three introduces the translation strategy and case analysis. There’re eleven examples has be selected in this thesis.The third part is conclusion. Through this translation practice, the translator has gained a lot of knowledge on translation theory as well as translator quality. During the translation process, the translator also gains a lot of knowledge to make contribution to the translation area.
