U-shaped hems of clothing of Buddhist stature is one of modeling elements of cassock Buddha statue, and it can be divided into two kinds, such as the generalized U-shaped hems and the U-shaped hems in a narrow sense. In the generalized U-shaped hems, we can see the irregular hems in early Gandhara Buddhist statures, the meticulous and exquisite and prominent hems in Gupta Buddha statues, and U-shaped and V-shaped hems of Buddhist statues in China. The U-shaped hems in a narrow sense mean that the Buddhist statures are wearing cassocks with covering the shoulders, whose hems arrangement in front of chest is regular. They present a state of spreading like concentric rings from the neck down, and their left and right sides are symmetrical, and they are a kind of be parallel and drooping hems.Judging by the development origin, the material objects with this kind of hems first appeared in Indian Gandhara and Mathura region. As recorded in Udayana stature, this kind of hems already began to be popular, and gradually spread to China and Japan, and the later known "Stewartia Boddhi" had a close relationship with them. In the early Buddha statues in southern China, the Buddha statures of U-shaped hems have been found on money trees and porcelain jars along China’s Yangtze river, and they became the important features of the early southern Buddhism statues and even affected the north of China, which is manifested in gold copper Buddha in the early Sixteen Kingdoms, stone pagoda in the Northern Liang Dynasty, and the early Buddhist statures of Binglingsi Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes. Finally, the paper expounds the reason why U-shaped hems appear in the early Buddhist statures in China, and tries to explore and analyze the spreading routes and ways, for example, it analyzes many possibilities of being introduced from the sea routes in the south and the land routes in the north. At the same time, starting from the relationship between the Buddhist statures in the Han and Jing Dynasties and the early gold and copper Buddhist statures, and through studying a new material in the era when Binglingsi Grottoes were excavated, the thesis also makes a multidimensional exploration for the possibility of impact of the early southern statues on the northern statues.
