| The international renowned comedian Mr. Chaplin once said that "Humor is the highest expression of wisdom." Indeed, humor is a great wisdom, it often boats a unique perspective and a unique way to judge colorful characters, to reflect social life,which is the indispensable comedy in our life. Humor, as a language arts, is reflected in the pragmatic skills. Humor is prevalent in human’s social life. According to its relationship with language, it can be divided into verbal humor and non-verbal humor.The researches of verbal humor has been for a long time. Humor is an indispensable part of people’s lives, and for a long time, scholars from psychology, philosophy,sociology and linguistics and other different angles aesthetics to study and analyze humor. Verbal humor,as an important part in normal daily communication is very common. Since humor often appears in the form of life in the conversation, so the verbal humor boasts very distinct pragmatic features. For many centuries, the study of humor has a greater progress,and from the perspective of linguistics, semantics,syntax, stylistic and pragmatic aspects of science research provides a wider field of views and also update the perspectives of humor. The study from the pragmatic point of view of humor is also very rich.Verbal humor, as the part of our common life’s humor output form, which is the perfect product of quality when we are talking, and which is also the essence of our human language! In our daily life, people like to use humor to convey the expression of the spirit of others’ ideology, but also it plays a role in the exchange of feelings,which is closer to the emotion from each other. In this thesis,the author uses the cooperative principle of pragmatics as a foundation,and uses the theoretical framework of Cooperative Principle to do the research of the verbal humor. Since Grice proposed the Cooperative Principle theory,which has been used for the development of science at very far-reaching impact, therefore, it is often regarded asthe pragmatics major central issue. Although the scholars who study the Cooperative Principle from different levels and different disciplines, even from different areas, but for the analysis of this topic, how to produce sessions and text humor, the Cooperative Principle has still the most effective pragmatic principles and pragmatic methods.So, the existence of the Cooperative Principle is just to illustrate how to ensure the smooth progress of talks and how to provide an authentic conversation to the two sides who want to cooperate with each other, and also, which is can provide the related information. Cooperative Principle contains four maxims, namely the maxim of quality,the maxim of quantity, the maxim of relation and the maxim of manner,only to follow the maxims and the Cooperative Principle, the conversations can achieve the most effective communicative effects. However, the speakers often violate the Cooperative Principle in one or several maxims to achieve a humorous expression,and this will produce some humorous effects, such as exaggeration, metaphor, irony,self-deprecating humor, and so on, therefore, verbal humor is a communicative act of non-cooperation.All the selected corpus in this thesis comes from a science fiction,which is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. In fact, in many science fictions,we could hardly find humorous dialogues, but in the book of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,or even in the whole series of Harry Potter, we can find the humorous dialogues everywhere. Science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction dealing with imaginative concepts such as futuristic scienceand technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universes and extraterrestrial life. Science fiction often explores the potential consequences of scientific and other innovations,and has been called a "literature of ideas." It usually eschews the supernatural, and unlike the related genre of fantasy, historically science fiction stories were intended to have at least a faint grounding in science-based fact or theory at the time the story was created, but this connection has become tenuous or non-existent in much of science fiction.Precisely because of this,the series of Harry Potter have been well-known and popular to most of people. The reasons why most of the people from all kinds of ages like and love Harry Potter series are----1. Returning to the happy experience for along time.2. The heavy suspense of the large span.3. Touching heart of innocence. 4.Win to win thinking of cooperation. 5. The spirit of optimism. "Harry Potter" series do not take place in the Middle Ages or the fictional "Middle-earth", but in the great inclusive and cultural integration of the development of the contemporary the United States of America, therefore, from different countries, different nationalities, even at different educational levels, people are able to quickly accept and love it; fantasy literature is inherently a very imaginative forms of literature, which has always been known for abstract writing, you can easily put the reader into a magical world.This thesis is to investigate the only one question: In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, how does the verbal humor achieve through violating the Cooperative Principle and the four maxims of the Cooperative Principle?There are seven books of this science fiction, because the first book of the seven is the initial stage of reading, which is easy to understand, that is the reason why the author selects the first book as the research goal, and all the humorous samples were all selected from this book and then the author organizes the examples to analysis.This thesis uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to inspect, and quantitative analysis is mainly used to calculate the exact number of times and what percentage in each violation of Cooperative Principle. Qualitative analysis is applied to the classification of humor in the book, and finally, the author uses the Cooperative Principle to analyze how the corpus she selected be humorous.The thesis hopes to give the reader a humorous interpretation of a deeper understanding of the process in this way. After a fine collection and a collation of data analysis, the author concluded that: In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, there shows a close relation between the Cooperative Principle and the verbal humor, and many dialogues produced the so-called “conversational implication” and verbal humor just because violate willfully the Cooperative Principle. Finally, the author further explores the good results of verbal humor used in the applications of English teaching.This study also boasts a certain significance for English teaching. And in the English classes, teacher can use some humorous language to take the students into ahappy learning atmosphere, the students can study English in a relaxed atmosphere,which can make the English learning become no longer boring. In the English language teaching, the teachers can also combine the examples that violate the maxims of Cooperative Principle, which appear in the reading materials, to analyze the dialogues, tasting the beauty of language and improving the reading abilities and communicative abilities of students, increasing the interest of learning English, and promoting a sense of humor at the same time.This thesis can be divided mainly into four chapters:Chapter One, it mainly introduces what humor is, what Cooperative Principle and the effects of violating the four maxims of Cooperative Principle;Chapter Two, it mainly introduces how the data and corpus collect, how to design the whole thesis and what the research problems;Chapter Three, to illustrate how the sessions violate the Cooperative Principle to produce the verbal humor through studying the specific instances in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone;Chapter Four, it mainly introduces the influence of English teaching through violating the four maxims of Cooperative Principle. |
