| Successful acquisition of vocabulary is inseparable from large amount of language input. But in China, due to the lack of contexts, textbooks are the major sources of vocabulary input,which makes the vocabulary evaluation of textbooks much more necessary.The aim of this paper is to make vocabulary evaluations on New Horizon College English for Reading and Writing with empirical corpus-based method. With the help of software Range and Antconc, this research has been conducted mainly in two aspects namely vocabulary coverage and frequency in NHCERW. For the purpose of this study, base wordlists embedded in Range were substituted by a self-made one on the basis of college English vocabulary. The three research questions are: 1. What is the coverage of College English Vocabulary in NHCERW? 2. How well is the coverage of College English Vocabulary in NHCERW compared with that of reading materials in CET4 and CET6? 3. What is the frequency of vocabulary in NHCERW?Results showed that NHCERW had a good coverage of College English Vocabulary but still had a big gap with CET6 in terms of vocabulary difficulty. In addition, the frequency was not satisfactory for a large amount of curriculum words occurred less than 4 times. And even for some high frequent words, the distributions appeared in an uneven way. By analyzing the strengths and weakness of vocabulary in NHCERW, the researcher gave some suggestions for schools, teachers, students as well as compliers. |
