A Study On Input Hypothesis In College Athletes’ English Reading Teaching

With the continuous development of the Internet era and the deepening of globalization, the students’ English ability becomes more and more important. For a group who often goes to the English-speaking countries for training and competition,how to improve athletes’ English ability has become an urgent issue. The purpose of this thesis is to elaborate the input hypothesis and the affective filter theory of Krashen, and to explore how to apply them to college athletes’ English reading teaching on the basis of empirical research.Firstly, this paper expounds the input hypothesis and the affective filter theory through method of literature, as well as the domestic and foreign research status on input hypothesis. The literature review also includes some experts’ views on the application of input hypothesis in reading.The author analyzes the current situation of college athletes’ English reading teaching, including their advantages as well as the difficulties they meet.In order to prove that the input hypothesis can enhance the college athletes’ English reading ability in practice, the author carries out a teaching experiment for a semester. Before the experiment, the author uses the questionnaire survey method to realize the students’ opinion of their English learning interest, English reading ability and the English class situation on hand. Then the author changes his teaching method in the experimental class according to the input hypothesis, while the teaching methods of the control class remain the original one. Finally, two sets of reading parts from PRETCO A TEST are used in pre-test and post-test. Through the comparison of experimental results, it indicates that English reading scores of the experimental class are higher than that of the control class.In the end, the paper puts forward some opinions and suggestions of the college athletes’ English reading teaching according to the experimental results. They include using proper understanding input, creating a comfortable and harmonious atmosphere in the classroom, taking the students as the center, enriching reading materials inside and outside the class and popularizing the multimedia micro course. At the same time,the shortcomings of this study and the problems needed to be solved in the future are also mentioned in the end.
