Wan’an Compass is a traditional handiwork with a long history and rich regional characteristics, and more importantly, it is also a typical representative of our traditional crafts that contains high technological contents and deep humanistic connotations. In recent years, with the attention paid to the research and protection of the intangible cultural heritage by our country and the traditional handicrafts by relevant government departments, many outstanding traditional handicrafts have been rejuvenated to some extent and developed rapidly. In Anhui Province, traditional handicrafts like Wan’an Compass, which reflects the regional features and historical influence, have been heeded. However, there are several urgent problems to be solved in the research and inheritance protection of traditional handicrafts, for instance, the lack of records and researches on traditional crafts, the inheritance of traditional crafts in modern society, the development of old stores, the research and development of new-type crafts on the basis of traditional technologies. How to solve these problems and balance the benefits of all parties, the most urgent task in the inheritances and development of arts and crafts, is the core issue to discuss and solve in this paper.As the typical of traditional Huizhou culture, Wan’an compass has a clear developing sequence and a long history of making skill, and each old compass shops have its own ordered inheritance and characteristics. The shape and structure and production of Wan’an compass contain the creation thoughts of Chinese ancients and stand for the development level of technology at the time. The shape and structure and production of Wan’an compasses which are making now retain the original appearance better, however, with the changes of society, they have new changes and methods of shape and structure and production. In today which changes happened dramatically in our society, Wan’an compass loss its initial functions gradually and is given new functions, which add new cultural connotation and historical significance. As more concern and exploration on traditional crafts, the traditional crafts like Wan’an compass which have rich cultural connotation and ordered inheritance shows its predominant vitality. Wan’an compass develops rapidly under the full cooperation of people in different fields, the relevant researches achieving certain results.The article selects the Huizhou traditional craft Wan’an compass, the first national class non-material cultural inheritance and takes the old compass store Wu Luheng as a center. Besides, taking the manufacturing process and inheritance situation of Wan’an compass as the entry, this thesis gives insight into the production, application, inheritance of Wan’an compass by literature information, object analysis according to field investigation and interview, trying to find the hidden culture, history, custom and so on, then discusses its evolution and significance of existence in today’s world. This paper analyzes the Wan’an compass’s origins and development history and background firstly. Then it introduces the shape and structure and production of Wan’an compass, which mainly talked about the making skill in the old compass store Wu Luheng. Next, it tells the applications and characteristics of Wan’an compass, analyzes the function changes and characteristics concretely. Finally, it summarizes the survival situation of Wan’an compass, especially on the recent situation of the inherits and the development of the traditional old shops. Hoping some practical ideas would be given on the future inheritances and protection as protecting the making skill of Wan’an compass thereby promotes its virtuous development.
