With grand length, impartial facts and diversified presentations, historical monographs are highly acknowledged by people from all over the world since the ancient times. Such works have their own characteristics, and the theories and approaches for translating this kind of texts are different from the ones used in other texts. In the translation of historical monographs, we should be loyal to the original text, the diction needs to be accurate and professional and the historical facts need to be explicitly and correctly conveyed.This report aims to explore the difficulties encountered and the corresponding translation skills and strategies the author used in the course of translating Citizen:A Chronicle of the French Revolution. This book is a historical monograph. It depicts the history of the French Revolution under the terror reign, whose Chinese version will be published by the Commercial Press. Featuring with rigorous style and complex sentence structure, it involves many historical figures and events. Based on the translation of the preface and epilogue of the book, this report records the process of translating a historical monograph, and discusses the criterion the author of this report try to fulfill in translation, as well as some translation skills and strategies that have been employed through specific cases.Five parts are included in this translation report. Part One gives a general picture of the translation project, including a brief introduction, an analysis and the significance of the project. Part Two describes the translation process, including preparation, planning and quality assurance. Part Three discusses the translation of words and phrases based on examples, including the criterion the author try to fulfill in translating proper nouns and the strategies used in translating other words and phrases. Part Four analyzes the translation skills and strategies in dealing with complex sentences. The last part is conclusion. It points out the lessons the author has learned in this translation project and shortcomings and deficiencies that still exist.Through this translation project, much experience has been gained by the author, all these will lay a solid foundation in translating similar translation projects in the future.
