Glinka and Pushkin both are very important figures in Russian culture and history, they lead Russian music and literature onto the world stage respectively. There are plenty of Glinka’s musical works adapted from Pushkin’s literary works, one of which, adapted from Pushkin’s narrative poem of the same name "Ruslan and Lyudmila", is very representative. Glinka had only composed two opera works in his life. The compose cycle of "Ruslan and Lyudmila" lasted for five years, during those years Glinka had overcome numerous difficulties. Eventually he identified the sample of mythical opera for future generation of Russian composers.The opera Ruslan and Lyudmila is one romantic myth opera full of Russian national style elements, whose story is based on a mythical legend from Russian folk. It mainly describes:Kiev state princess being abducted by Black Sea Devil on her wedding night; her husband rushes to rescue her by going through numerous difficulties and dangers; at the end, her husband successfully rescued her after defeated rivals and Black Sea Devil with Wizard Finn’s helps. Here’re three chapters in this paper, chapter one brief introduces Pushkin, Glinka and the background of "Ruslan and Lyudmila"; Chapter two comprehensively clarifies how Russia national style music emerge in Glinka’s opera composing, and the way by which romantic music impact him. The third chapter compares Glinka’s music works with Pushkin’s literary works, and discusses how musical language and literary language express similar themes and thoughts.
