As one of the m ost famous British writers at present age, Doris Lessing is honou red as the greatest fem ale writer after Woolf, and gained the Nobel Prize in Lite rature in 2007. In the nearly 60 years of literary creation, Lessing’ s works involve va rious aspects of human life, such as colonialism, racial discrim ination, mental disorder and so on. She also shows rare enthusiasm on ecological aspe ct. Especially her novel, Particularly Cats, fully embodies her ecological thoughts. The thesis tries to in terpret the novel Particularly Cats from the perspective of ecocriticism which contains three relationships, namely, man-nature relationship, man-man relationship and m an-self relationship, From the perspective of the relationship between nature and hum an, it expounds that hum ans destroy and plunder nature, and the root, which arouses the transition of the relationship between nature and human, is the idea of anthropocentrism. From the perspective of the relationship between man and m an, it analyzes hum an’s indifference to other. This alienation of human relations ind irectly leads to the d ecay of hum an society in nature. From the perspective of the relationship between man and the self, it points out that human’s lost faith and endless desires, which cause hum an self lost. Lessing points out that the rapid development of industry and technology not onl y causes the ecological crisis of nature, but also brings ecological crisis in human’s society and spiritual world. She emphasizes that the crisis of man’s spiritual ecology, caused by industrial civilization, is much more severe than the destruction on nature. The thesis illustrates Lessing’ s pursuit of reconstructing ecology in Particularly Cats, namely, by returning to nature, caring for others and awakening self-consciousness to rebuild harm onious ecological homeland; and reveals Lessing’ s ecological thoughts, that is, hum ans should return to and blend in nature, learn to care for others, as well as find self under the influence of nature and love to achieve the full and healthy spiritual world eventually. This is also the suggestions given by Lessing about the best way to heal ecological crisis between nature and human, society, spirit as well. |
