In the early twentieth century, when Chinese modern arts activities were developing very hard, Pan Yu-liang burst into the Chinese painting circle irresistibly with her perseverance and persistence toward art, and became one of the Chinese paintresses who went to Europe to study painting earliest. She devoted her whole life into combining the merits of Chinese and Western painting, involving oil painting, traditional Chinese painting, sculpture, print and many other fields of arts, in which she had formed her special style of arts and obtained great achievements. This paper studies Pan Yu-liang’s painting techniques from her works to further comprehend her combination of the conceptions of Chinese and Western painting, and explores the formation and development of her painting techniques as well as their guiding significance toward the modern and contemporary painting.The paper firstly introduces the background of the formation of Pan Yu-liang’s painting techniques, including domestic and foreign era backgrounds and learning experience which affected her. Secondly, Pan Yu-liang’s different periods, different themes and different kinds of painting works, have been analyzed in term of painting techniques. From the analysis result, Pan Yu-liang’s fusion and reference of Chinese and Western painting techniques can be understood. Painter’s artistic ideas and different painting styles have been noticed by comparing her works with contemporary painters’. Finally, evaluations of Pan Yu-liang’s works by the famous person both nationally and internationally have been summarized, and Pan Yu-liang’s outstanding achievements in painting have been affirmed. In addition, new generation painters’ paintings have been analyzed to understand the new features of contemporary Chinese painting.Pan Yu-liang’s unique life and learning experiences have a great influence on the formation of her painting techniques. The Chinese line skill was combined into the Western oil painting by her, and the performance techniques of Western active painting school had been referenced by Pan Yu-liang in traditional Chinese painting creation. In the process of continuous creation and practice, Pan Yu-liang’ unique style of painting was gradually formed. Pan Yu-liang’ unique painting techniques improved the artistic Chapter III analyzes the possibilities of bringing Jiaguwen characters into life via expression of Pan Yu-liang’s works. Her painting techniques not only opened up a precedent for nationalization of oil painting, but also enriched the language of Western painting performance. Otherwise, different living environment and family background created Pan Yu-liang and other contemporary painters’ distinctive styles of painting. These distinctive styles of painting have a significant and far-reaching impact on the development of modern painting techniques.
