New culture is the historical trend emerged in the 1970s, new cultural historians focus on various historical periods of the role of cultural phenomena and the effect of cultural, they think sometimes culture decide the development of the historical events and political affairs, at the same time, the new cultural history focus on small historical events and characters, claims that from the bottom to understand history, and with the aid of the theory of historical anthropology, new culture pay attention to study the concept of the locals. Robert Darnton is such a new cultural historians, and all of his works can be seen as the books and the interpretation of cultural transmission. This article will use the perspective of cultural transmission to understand Darnton’s new cultural history research, and will analyze these research and evaluate it.This article is divided into four parts:Preface part synoptically tells the story of the relevant background and the research characteristics of the new cultural history and its arose, then combed the general study of Robert Darnton, and the significance of this article.The first part introduces the Darnton’s life experience and the influence to his historical study, then discusses the relationship between Darnton’s work, the new cultural history and cultural transmission. Lay the foundation for studying the cultural transmission perspectives of Darnton’s new cultural history researchThe second part is the main part of the article, mainly discusses the Darnton cultural transmission mode. In this mode, the underground author o, books, publishers, printing worker, transportation workers, booksellers and the author formed a book exchange circle. With the circle of communication, enlightenment can be further spread in a wide range of the crowd, when the ordinary people read the books contains enlightenment views,they did not trust the rule of the old system, and eventually led to the revolution.The third part analyzes the novel of Darnton’s new cultural history research, affirmed his new culture dissemination of cultural history research and the reference significance for historians, and also put forward question as well as disadvantages from other scholars.
